HOUSTON MEET DRAWS WORLD ATHLETES

Top gymnasts from around the world gathered at the George Brown Convention Center March 4–7 for the 16^th Annual Houston International Invitational. Among those competing were the trampoline and tumbling team (T & T) and the men’s gymnastics team from Eagle’s Wings Athletics (EWA) in Allen.

Several members of EWA’s T & T team took part in the synchronized trampoline competition. Cole Kirby and Wyatt Sharp were right in sync, and came away as the Level 7 winners. In the Level 9 division, Rebecca Clouthier and Hannah Green won a silver medal, while Caden Kirby and Isaac Rowley won bronze. Coming in second place for Level 6 were Caeley Black and Tyler Dunning.

Cole Kirby and Dunning also earned gold medals in individual events in the 9 and 10 year-old group. Kirby won first on double mini in the Level 7 division, and placed second on trampoline. Dunning won his gold in Level 5 tumbling, and added a silver medal for Level 6 trampoline, and a bronze for Level 7 double mini.

In the Level 9 age 11-12 division, Rowley took second on double mini, while Caden Kirby took third. Rowley also took third on trampoline.

In the 15 and over group, Bryan Bashrum earned two bronze medals – Level 10 double mini and Level 9 trampoline. Hannah Green and Kelsey Dock took second and third, respectively, on Level 9 double mini. Sara Stewart competed level 7 tumbling where she earned a silver medal for second place.

Level 10’s Melissa Courtad and Sydney Wendt won bronze medals. Courtad earned hers on trampoline in the 17 and over age group, while Wendt, in the age 13-14 group, earned third on tumbling and trampoline.

Brittany Stout won second place in level 8 tumbling and Macey Levine took silver medals on both Level 7 double mini and Level 5 tumbling.

The EWA men’s gymnastics team also had their day at the Invitational. Level 7 Cole Wilhelm won second place on high bar with a score of 14.8, and tied for second on vault (14.4). Out of the 15 competitors in the age 12 and over group, he place fifth all-around (83.0). Drew Huck and Christopher Bowling competed in the age 10-11 division, with 56 other athletes. Huck took sixth place on pommel horse, tied for eighth on vault, and tied for ninth on floor exercise to earn ninth place all-around (85.3).

Level 8 Chandler Guvernator was one of 43 gymnasts in the age 12 and over division. He tied for eighth place on pommel horse and eleventh place all-around (66.5).

Cameron Lake, Level 9, tied for 12^th place on floor exercise out of the 78 competitors in his age group.

Johann Handszer and Evan Fitzgerald competed Level 10 in the age 14-15 group. Handszer tied for fifth place on floor exercise (13.7), earned sixth on pommel horse (13.5), tied for eighth on still rings, and tenth on parallel bars and high bar to place sixth all-around (78.2). Fitzgerald placed tenth on vault out of the 48 competitors. On high bar in the age 16-18 division, Justin Muenz earned the seventh spot and Logan Doughty tied for ninth, out of the 57 athletes competing.

On The Road Again

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

ALLEN, TX: The men’s gymnastics team at Eagle’s Wings Athletics (EWA) had a busy weekend February 26 and 27, competing in meets in New Orleans, Louisiana and in Garland.

Several Level 9 and 10 boys traveled to Tulane University to take part in the New Orleans Jazz Invite. Cameron Lake was the Level 9 all-around champion in the age 12-13 division, earning a score of 72.4. He took gold medals on four events – floor exercise (13.0), parallel bars (12.5), pommel horse (12.2) and high bar (11.5) - and silver on vault (12.7).

Logan Doughty, Evan Fitzgerald, and Adam Templin competed Level 10. Doughty earned first place on parallel bars (13.7) and pommel horse (12.9) in the age 16-18 group. Fitzgerald won vault (14.3) and pommel horse (12.6), and placed second on high bar (12.4) and parallel bars (12.1) in the age 14-15 division. The combined Level 9 and 10 team earned second place in the team awards.

At the Garland Classic Invite the next day, Level 10 Justin Muenz took third place all-around by winning gold on floor exercise (13.5), pommel horse (13.1) and still rings (13.0) and silver on high bar (11.8).

The Level 6 team earned the third place team award. Bradley Weatherford was the vault champion, earning 15.0 on that event in the age 10-11 group. He also placed third on floor exercise (14.4). Carter Frederick, in the age 8-9 division, took two silver medals on parallel bars with a 15.4 and high bar with a 14.5. In the older group, Brian McCray earned a 14.4 on high bar for third place.

The Level 5 team also earned third place. Brian Le was the all-around champion in the age 10 and over division, taking second on parallel bars (15.2) and high bar (14.8), and third on floor exercise (14.6) to help him earn an 87.7 all-around score. Chance Melancon won the vault (15.5) and tied for second on still rings (14.8) with teammate Jake Sikora. In the age 7-8 group, Logan Cobb earned a silver medal on vault for his 15.2 score.

Boys Team in Austin

BOYS TEAM IN AUSTIN

The men’s gymnastics team spent the weekend in Austin, where the Level 5 boys, ages 10 and over, earned the first place team award. Brian Le earned the title of all-around champion with a total score of 88.0. He also won gold on high bar (15.2), silver on floor exercise (14.7) and parallel bars (14.5), and bronze on vault (14.7) and still rings (14.5). Teammate Jake Sikora won gold on parallel bars (14.6) and silver on pommel horse/mushroom (14.7). Chance Melancon was the runner up on vault with a score of 14.8. Andy Hoover rounded out the winning team.

The Level 5, 9 year-olds won second place team, just .1 behind the first place team. Devan Arvidson took second place on high bar (14.9) and Mac Stout placed third on vault (14.50). Ryan Phillips also contributed by getting the highest all-around score (81.2) of the three boys on the team.

Only two EWA boys competed in the 7-8 year-old division, one shy of having enough to compete for the team award. Both boys earned medals – Logan Cobb took gold on still rings (15.3) and Gavin McAllister took silver on high bar (14.9) and bronze on rings (15.0).

The Level 4 team, with only three boys, took third place in the team award. Ethan Tibbs earned third place on still rings (15.3), and Braxton Brooks and Garrett Ganakos contributed to the team score. “Each boy went up from before,” said head coach Greg Schram. “And the team score went up 12 points!”

Women Compete at Natia Comaneci Invite

WOMEN COMPETE AT NADIA COMANECI INVITE

The Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy hosted the annual Nadia Comaneci Invitational in Oklahoma City, where two EWA gymnasts received the Spirit Award. Makenzie Johnson and Isabella Gordillo received custom Nadia Comaneci Invitational watches, from Comaneci herself, for their outstanding performances on floor exercise.

Level 10 Johnson also won first place on vault with a score of 9.475, and third on floor (9.45) and uneven parallel bars (8.8) to win silver all-around (36.375) in the age 15 division. Casey Dreyer was the floor exercise champion in the age 13-14 group, winning that event with a score of 9.45. She also took second place on vault (9.05).

Natalie May won silver on both floor (9.6) and bars (9.075), and bronze on vault (9.3) to earn second place all-around (36.55) in the Level 7, 12 and over division. Gordillo took second on floor (9.55) and third on vault (9.3) in the 11-year old group, while Sierra Thain took silver on bars (9.175) in the age 9-10 division.

Level 4 gymnast Abbie Haigwood was the vault champion with a score of 9.5. Abigail Johnston won floor exercise (9.3) and took third place on vault (9.375) and balance beam (8.7). Both girls competed in the age 6-7 division.

FLYERS AT THE TOP

The Eagle’s Wings Athletics (EWA) cheer team has added yet another title to their undefeated season repertoire, the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) National Championships. Held this past weekend in Dallas, the Flyers took first place in the Level One Small Team division. Coaches Anthony Thomas and Dabney Eiland received the Best Choreography award for the division.

TUMBLING AT TREVINO’S

The Trampoline and Tumbling (T & T) team competed at Trevino’s and brought home 19 medals. Bryan Bashrum, in the age 15-16 division, brought home gold medals for level 9 tumbling and trampoline, and a silver medal for Level 10 double mini.

Several athletes competed Level 7, all earning bronze medals. Wyatt Sharp earned his on double mini in the 9 – 10 year-old group. Morgan Johnson and Charlotte Pearce also earned theirs on double mini, Pearce in the age 13-14 group, and Johnson in the 15 and over division. Pearce’s other bronze was on trampoline, while Veronica Prior took bronze on trampoline in the 11-12 year-old division.

Level 6 Kylie Harris won first place for tumbling and second on trampoline in the 9-10 group. Also in that age group, Caeley Black won gold on trampoline, and Wyatt Sharp took silver on tumbling. Tyler Dunning and Gaby Williams earned silver in the age 11-12 group. Dunning earned his on trampoline and Williams earned hers on tumbling and double mini.

Black also competed Level 5 tumbling, where she took first place in her age group. Macy Levine earned first on tumbling in the age 11-12 division.

Abigail Stewart placed third in Level 4 trampoline and Level 2 tumbling.

Cheer Team Wins 3rd Straight National Title

CHEER TEAM WINS THIRD STRAIGHT NATIONAL TITLE

The entire gym at Eagle’s Wings Athletics (EWA) is in full competition mode since all of its teams are in the middle of competition season, and are racking up awards. The EWA Flyers cheer team continues their undefeated season by taking yet another National Title in a Cheer Gyms Association (CGA) competition held in San Antonio February 14. The Flyers, coached by Anthony Thomas and Dabney Eiland, took first place at the small gym nationals, and earned overall High Point honors in their division. Lauren Huck was recognized with the WOW! award for her outstanding performance.

USAG Girls at WOGA Classic

USAG GIRLS AT WOGA CLASSIC

Sabrina Schwab, a Level 10 gymnast competing in the ages 8 – 13 group, won four gold medals at the WOGA Classic held in Frisco February 12-14. Schwab’s wins came on floor exercise (9.35), vault (9.15), uneven parallel bars (9.175) and all-around (36.025).

Level 10 Makenzie Johnson, competing in the age 14-15 group, tied for first place all-around with a score of 36.65. She also took third place on vault (9.25). Casey Dreyer earned bronze on floor exercise (9.3).

The Level 10 team took home the third place team award.

On the Level 7 team, Natalie May competed in the age 13 and over group and was the balance beam champion (9.475), along with taking second on vault (9.4) and third on floor (9.375) to earn second place all-around (37.3). In the age 11-12 group, Isabella Gordillo was the vault champion (9.6). Sierra Thain took silver on balance beam (9.4) in the age 7-10 division.

The Level 4 team also competed. In the 6 to 7 year-old division, Abbie Haigwood was the floor exercise champion (9.6), and tied for second on vault (9.75) with teammate Abigail Johnston. Haigwood also took third on beam (9.4) and all-around (37.95). Madelyn Johnson earned bronze on floor exercise (9.5). In the eight year-old group, Kynsey Hennen took third place on balance beam with a score of 9.2. The Level 4 team won third place in the team awards.

Four girls competed Level 4 Achievement, earning colored ribbons for scores in a certain range. Earning blue ribbons on vault for scores of 9.0 and above was Alysia Burwinkel and Jillian Goodrich (9.65), and Grace Felton (9.05). Red ribbons for 8.0-8.9 scores were given to Burwinkel on balance beam and floor, Felton on beam and floor, and Keira Cushman on vault.

Trampoline and Tumbling Winners in Lubbock

TRAMPOLINE AND TUMBLING WINNERS IN LUBBOCK

EWA’s Trampoline and Tumbling (T & T) team competed in the 2010 Extreme Winter Classic held February 13 in Lubbock. Mary Rossi competed Junior elite on double mini, earning a bronze medal there, to go with her gold medal from Level 10 trampoline in the age 15-16 group. In the Level 10, age 17 and over division, Melissa Courtad won first place on the trampoline, and teammate Emily Beasley won second. Beasley also placed first on tumbling.

In the 13 and 14 year-old group, Sydney Wendt won Level 10 trampoline and tumbling, and took third for level 9 double mini. Brittany Stout won Level 8 tumbling.

Hannah Green, competing Level 9 in the 15 and over division, earned gold on double mini and silver on trampoline. Sarah Stewart won Level 7 tumbling and took second on Level 8 double mini.

For the boys, Cole Kirby took two golds (Level 7 trampoline and Level 6 tumbling) and a bronze (Level 7 double mini) in the age 9-10 group.

Caden Kirby and Isaac Rowley competed Level 9 in the age 11-12 group, where Kirby won double mini and took third on trampoline, while Rowley took silver on trampoline and bronze on double mini.

Brian Schmidt, in the age 15-16 division, won two silver medals – Level 10 trampoline and Level 9 double mini.

The T & T team at EWA is coached by Amy McDonald, Josh Williams, and Bret Stout.
