WINNERS AT REGIONALS

regionalsl7Cole Wilhelm didn’t just win, he won big. Cole has had an extremely successful competitive season as a gymnast at Eagle’s Wings Athletics (EWA) in Allen. The season is not over yet, but Cole returned to Allen as Regional Champion times three. He won first place on parallel bars with a score of 15.0, first on high bar (14.7) and tied for first on vault (15.2). He earned a silver medal on floor exercise (15.5) and all around (87.7), and took 11th on pommel horse (13.0) and 12th on still rings (14.3) out of the 23 competitors in the Level 7, age 12-13 division.

The USA Men’s Gymnastics Regional Championships were held April 9-10 at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Fifteen EWA gymnasts, levels 6 through 10, competed. Only Levels 9 and 10 are eligible to advance to Nationals, held in Tennessee next month, and all of EWA’s Level 9 and 10 athletes did just that.

On the Level 10 team, Evan Fitzgerald earned fourth on pommel horse (13.15), and eighth on floor exercise and high bar in the 14-15 year-old division. He earned 12th place all-around with a score of 75.05. Logan Doughty, in the 16-18 group, tied for seventh on parallel bars (13.75), placed ninth on floor exercise, and 12th on high bar. These two, along with teammate Justin Muenz, and Level 9 Cameron Lake, will be advancing to Nationals.

regionalsl8Chandler Guvernator competed Level 8, where he earned fourth place on high bar (11.15), fifth on vault (12.2) and rings (11.5), ninth on floor exercise, and 8th all-around (67.8).

Other notable finishes from the men’s team were Level 7 Drew Huck earning tenth on floor exercise, Level 6 Brian McCray (age 12-13 division) placing fifth on vault (14.2) and ninth on parallel bars, and Carter Frederick placing ninth on bars in the Level 6, age 8-9 division.

Boys Level 6-10 State

BOYS LEVEL 6-10 STATE

The Men’s gymnastics team from EWA traveled to Austin for the Level 6-10 State Championships. Cole Wilhelm, a Level 7 athlete in the age 12-13 group, was a four-time State champion, earning first place wins on vault (15.1), parallel bars (14.8), pommel horse (14.0) and all-around (85.9). He tied for silver on high bar (14.3) and placed fourth on floor exercise (14.4) and seventh on still rings (13.3). Wilhelm, along with Level 7 teammates Drew Huck and Christopher Bowling, qualified to advance to the Regional Championships.

Level 8 Chandler Guvernator and Level 9 Cameron Lake also qualified for Regionals. Guvernator tied for eighth place all-around (67.6), earning fourth on vault (12.9), tying for seventh on rings (11.0), and placing eighth on parallel bars (11.9) and high bar (10.6).

Level 10 Justin Muenz tied for sixth on high bar and earned tenth all-around in the age 16-18 group. Johann Handszer took bronze on still rings (12.7) and pommel horse (12.6) and sixth on vault (13.75). He was injured during warm ups on high bar so scratched the last two events. Evan Fitzgerald, in the age 14-15 division, earned fifth place on floor exercise (13.3), tied for seventh on pommel horse (12.2) and tied for tenth on vault (13.4). Muenz, Fitzgerald, and Logan Doughty qualified to Regionals, while Handzser will petition straight to Nationals.

Several Level 6 gymnasts placed in the top ten as well. Carter Frederick tied for sixth place on parallel bars (15.0) in the 8-9 year old group. Bradley Weatherford, age 11, took seventh on vault (15.0), while in the age 12-13 group Brian McCray tied for sixth place on parallel bars (14.1), and took eighth place on high bar (14.5) and still rings (12.1).

Head Coach Greg Schram, along with Bob Martichuski, Wesley Cox, Craig Locke, and Evan Fitzgerald coach the men’s team at EWA.

MEN’S TEAM ON THE MOVE

mens-team-webTwo Level 10s from Allen’s Eagle’s Wings Athletics men’s gymnastics team competed in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the Men’s Intercollegiate Gymnastics Support (MIGS) Program National Meet. The main goal of the MIGS program is to increase participation in men’s gymnastics in college.

Logan Doughty was the parallel bars champion in the age 16-18 division. He also earned second place on high bar (12.6), and third on vault (14.3), still rings (11.6) and all-around (75.2).

Evan Fitzgerald competed in the age 14-15 group. He earned four silver medals - all-around (74.7), vault (14.2), floor exercise (13.7), and pommel horse (12.4), and bronze on high bar (11.2).

“With only our two boys competing, we still received third place team out of the four teams,” remarked EWA’s head men’s team coach Greg Schram.

Boys from the Levels 4 and 5 teams competed in Euless at the Empire Last Chance Meet. Brian Le was the Level 5, age 12 and over all-around champion, earning 88.5 total. He was also the pommel horse/mushroom champ (14.8) and tied for first on parallel bars (14.6). He earned silver medals on floor exercise (15.0), high bar (14.9) and vault (14.8). His parallel bars tie was with teammate Chance Melancon, who also placed third on floor exercise (14.7). Andy Hoover won bronze on vault (14.7) and rings (14.6).

Jake Sikora, who competed in the 10-11 division, tied for second on high bar (14.5) and vault (14.2), and earned third on pommel horse/mushroom (14.6), rings (14.5), and all-around (86.4). Gavin McCallister tied for third on rings (14.9) in the age 7-8 division.

On the Level 4 team, Ethan Tibbs won third on pommel horse/mushroom (12.0) and fourth all-around (84.0). Braxton Brooks placed third on parallel bars (14.8), while Garrett Ganakos tied for third on vault (14.3).

“The Level 4 boys showed a lot of improvement at this meet from their last meet,” said Coach Schram. “They were more focused and dedicated.”

ALLEN, TX: The men’s gymnastics team at Eagle’s Wings Athletics (EWA) had a busy weekend February 26 and 27, competing in meets in New Orleans, Louisiana and in Garland.

Several Level 9 and 10 boys traveled to Tulane University to take part in the New Orleans Jazz Invite. Cameron Lake was the Level 9 all-around champion in the age 12-13 division, earning a score of 72.4. He took gold medals on four events – floor exercise (13.0), parallel bars (12.5), pommel horse (12.2) and high bar (11.5) - and silver on vault (12.7).

Logan Doughty, Evan Fitzgerald, and Adam Templin competed Level 10. Doughty earned first place on parallel bars (13.7) and pommel horse (12.9) in the age 16-18 group. Fitzgerald won vault (14.3) and pommel horse (12.6), and placed second on high bar (12.4) and parallel bars (12.1) in the age 14-15 division. The combined Level 9 and 10 team earned second place in the team awards.

At the Garland Classic Invite the next day, Level 10 Justin Muenz took third place all-around by winning gold on floor exercise (13.5), pommel horse (13.1) and still rings (13.0) and silver on high bar (11.8).

The Level 6 team earned the third place team award. Bradley Weatherford was the vault champion, earning 15.0 on that event in the age 10-11 group. He also placed third on floor exercise (14.4). Carter Frederick, in the age 8-9 division, took two silver medals on parallel bars with a 15.4 and high bar with a 14.5. In the older group, Brian McCray earned a 14.4 on high bar for third place.

The Level 5 team also earned third place. Brian Le was the all-around champion in the age 10 and over division, taking second on parallel bars (15.2) and high bar (14.8), and third on floor exercise (14.6) to help him earn an 87.7 all-around score. Chance Melancon won the vault (15.5) and tied for second on still rings (14.8) with teammate Jake Sikora. In the age 7-8 group, Logan Cobb earned a silver medal on vault for his 15.2 score.

MORE AWARDS FOR ALLEN GYM

mens-team-webEagle’s Wings Athletics (EWA) was the place to be on February 6 as their men’s gymnastics team hosted the annual Friendship Invitational, with teams coming into town from around the state.

Three EWA teams took first place in the team awards. Cole Wilhelm was a member of the Level 7 team that earned gold. He earned first place on every event and the all-around. Cole’s high score, 14.8, was on parallel bars, followed by a 14.7 on floor exercise, 14.6 on still rings, 14.4 on high bar, 14.3 on vault, and 13.60 on pommel horse. He earned the all-around gold in the age 12-13 division with a total score of 86.4.

Also taking gold all-around (86.5), was Drew Huck in the age 10-11 group. He was the parallel bars champion (15.2), and tied for silver on pommel horse (14.1), and took bronze on floor and high bar. Christopher Bowling and Drew Sikora tied for first on still rings, both earning 14.9. Bowling also earned second on parallel bars (14.8).

The level 10 team also earned a first place team trophy. Logan Doughty won vault (14.3), and took second on parallel bars, and third on high bar, floor and all-around. Evan Fitzgerald, who competed in the age 14-15 group, took second all-around (72.5) and silver on four events (rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar) and bronze on floor and pommel horse. Adam Templin earned third place on rings and vault in the age 16-18 division.

The final first place team was the age 10 and older boys from Level 5. Brian Le was the all-around (89.6), vault (15.4) and floor exercise champion (15.1). He earned second on pommel horse/mushroom and third on rings, and both bars. Jake Sikora tied for second place on parallel bars and took third on rings in the age 10-11 division.

On the younger Level 5 team, Gavin McAllister earned a silver medal on vault with a score of 15.2.

Carter Frederick was the Level 6 parallel bars champion (15.6), and Quinn Maloney earned third on vault, while Nicholas Brocklesby earned third on rings. The eight boys on the Level 6 team earned the second place team award.

Sole EWA Level 8 gymnast Chandler Guvernator not only won the all-around (66.9), but also won rings, vault, and both bars. He took third on floor and pommel horse.

Level 9 Cameron Lake was the pommel horse champion, and earned silver on parallel bars and all-around, and bronze on vault.

USAG Men Compete In Houston

USAG MEN COMPETE IN HOUSTON

Level 9 and 10 gymnasts from EWA’s men’s team competed at the GymMasters Invite in Houston January 23. Logan Doughty, Level 10, earned a silver medal on vault (14.10) and floor exercise (13.00). Evan Fitzgerald, also Level 10, placed second on parallel bars (12.90) and third on vault (13.90). Adam Templin also helped the team earn third place in the team awards.

Level 9 Cameron Lake had an exciting warm up session on still rings as Olympian Jonathan Horton was in line right in front of him. After the session the entire team got to hear Horton, fellow Olympian Raj Bhavsar, and former Olympic Men’s coach and current Men’s National Team Coordinator, Kevin Mazeika, as they spoke to the athletes about mental toughness and focus.
