Local Athlete Earns Prestigious Trophy

For one local athlete it’s time to add the first place all-around trophy from the prestigious Houston National Invitational gymnastics competition to her large collection of hard-earned medals and plaques.
Level 10 Makenzie Johnson, of Eagle’s Wings Athletics in Allen, took the all-around title during the 17th annual meet held March 4-6 at the George Brown Convention Center in Houston. She also medaled on all four individual events, earning another first place award on floor exercise (9.225). She took silver on vault (9.2) and bronze on balance beam (9.2) and uneven parallel bars (9.05).
“Winning the HNI made me feel so good inside and I knew that if I kept trying my best I would be able to accomplish much more,” said Johnson. “Regardless of your past, if you work hard and set your mind to something you will be able to accomplish so much in life.”
Johnson has had a rough start this season, first injuring her toe on uneven bars at the beginning of the season, and then getting ill days before another meet. During competition season any time on restricted workouts, or out of the gym sick, is precious time lost. For this reason, most gymnasts don’t take time off when they’re hurt, but they modify their workouts to accommodate the injury and try to let it heal.
Makenzie’s coaches, Alex Atamas and Helen Verucchi, believe in her. “The good thing about Makenzie is that she can work through the pain and can put things together very quickly,” said Verucchi. “This is a good quality for a gymnast. I still believe the best is yet to come this season.”

Join us for our next Mini Meet coming in April!
Our Next Mini Meet: April 16, 2011
Our Most Recent Mini Meet:
Gingerbread Jam Mini Meet December 2010
General Information:
Mini Meets at EWA are a great way to see how your child is progressing in his/her class.
Each student enrolled in one of our Mini Meets will perform a combination of skills (routines) that they have learned in class. Our EWA team students will judge them based on their performance. Scores will not be given like in a real meet, but we will recognize if the students can successfully perform the skills on each event or if they need a little help. If all of the skills on the event are done well with no spot or help from the coach, they will receive a blue ribbon. If they need a spot or just can’t quite complete the skill, they will receive a green ribbon for doing their best. If the students receive all blue ribbons, they will also receive a trophy and will advance to the next class level! No matter what or how the student performs, they will all receive ribbons and be rewarded for doing their best!
Price:
Spaces are limited for Mini Meets, so we strongly suggest you register for Mini Meets as soon as you can! Registration is $15 per student, and we do not accept registrations past the Saturday prior to the Mini Meet.

Men’s Team Rocks
The Eagle’s Wings Athletics Men’s Team is getting close to the end of their competitive season. They have been improving steadily, and they have had great showings at their meets! Recently the EWA Men’s Team hosted one of the biggest and best Level 6-10 State Championships at McKinney North High School. It was an incredible weekend with the gymnasts, coaches, parents, staff, and the coaches/judges from the men’s community all helping together to make it such a huge success!! All of our Level 6-10s qualified to the Regional Meet that will be in Austin from April 1st-3rd. The Level 4s & 5s just had their last invitational meet in Garland at the Brandenburg Invite on March 26th. They all improved in many areas and the Level 5s were able to compete as a team one last time before the state meet (which will have them separated by age-groups and sessions). Ryan Phillips won the Gold Medal on Parallel Bars, and several of our boys received silver and bronze medals. The Level 4s & 5s end their season with their state meet on April 9th & 10th in Euless. The Level 6s & 8s end their season with the regional meet mentioned above. The Level 9s and 10s will try to qualify from regionals to the National Meet that will be in Long Beach, California, from May 3rd-8th. So, great job so far boys, and good luck as you finish your season!!! Go EWA Boys!!!

For those who have yet to try out, we are letting you come to our 8pm tumble classes to Monday - Thursday this week for an opportunity to get ahead of the competition!
