CHEER TEAM WINS THIRD STRAIGHT NATIONAL TITLE

cheer_sa_0671The entire gym at Eagle’s Wings Athletics (EWA) is in full competition mode since all of its teams are in the middle of competition season, and are racking up awards.  The EWA Flyers cheer team continues their undefeated season by taking yet another National Title in a Cheer Gyms Association (CGA) competition held in San Antonio February 14.  The Flyers, coached by Anthony Thomas and Dabney Eiland, took first place at the small gym nationals, and earned overall High Point honors in their division.  Lauren Huck was recognized with the WOW! award for her outstanding performance.

USAG GIRLS AT WOGA CLASSIC

dsc05021Sabrina Schwab, a Level 10 gymnast competing in the ages 8 – 13 group, won four gold medals at the WOGA Classic held in Frisco February 12-14. Schwab’s wins came on floor exercise (9.35), vault (9.15), uneven parallel bars (9.175) and all-around (36.025).

Level 10 Makenzie Johnson, competing in the age 14-15 group, tied for first place all-around with a score of 36.65. She also took third place on vault (9.25). Casey Dreyer earned bronze on floor exercise (9.3).

The Level 10 team took home the third place team award.

On the Level 7 team, Natalie May competed in the age 13 and over group and was the balance beam champion (9.475), along with taking second on vault (9.4) and third on floor (9.375) to earn second place all-around (37.3). In the age 11-12 group, Isabella Gordillo was the vault champion (9.6). Sierra Thain took silver on balance beam (9.4) in the age 7-10 division.

In the 6 to 7 year-old division, Abbie Haigwood was the floor exercise champion (9.6), and tied for second on vault (9.75) with teammate Abigail Johnston. Haigwood also took third on beam (9.4) and all-around (37.95). Madelyn Johnson earned bronze on floor exercise (9.5). In the eight year-old group, Kynsey Hennen took third place on balance beam with a score of 9.2. The Level 4 team won third place in the team awards.

Four girls competed Level 4 Achievement, earning colored ribbons for scores in a certain range. Earning blue ribbons on vault for scores of 9.0 and above was Alysia Burwinkel and Jillian Goodrich (9.65), and Grace Felton (9.05). Red ribbons for 8.0-8.9 scores were given to Burwinkel on balance beam and floor, Felton on beam and floor, and Keira Cushman on vault.

Trampoline and Tumbling Winners in Lubbock

TRAMPOLINE AND TUMBLING WINNERS IN LUBBOCK

t-t-team-webEWA’s Trampoline and Tumbling (T & T) team competed in the 2010 Extreme Winter Classic held February 13 in Lubbock. Mary Rossi competed Junior elite on double mini, earning a bronze medal there, to go with her gold medal from Level 10 trampoline in the age 15-16 group. In the Level 10, age 17 and over division, Melissa Courtad won first place on the trampoline, and teammate Emily Beasley won second. Beasley also placed first on tumbling.

In the 13 and 14 year-old group, Sydney Wendt won Level 10 trampoline and tumbling, and took third for level 9 double mini. Brittany Stout won Level 8 tumbling.

Hannah Green, competing Level 9 in the 15 and over division, earned gold on double mini and silver on trampoline. Sarah Stewart won Level 7 tumbling and took second on Level 8 double mini.

For the boys, Cole Kirby took two golds (Level 7 trampoline and Level 6 tumbling) and a bronze (Level 7 double mini) in the age 9-10 group.

Caden Kirby and Isaac Rowley competed Level 9 in the age 11-12 group, where Kirby won double mini and took third on trampoline, while Rowley took silver on trampoline and bronze on double mini.

Brian Schmidt, in the age 15-16 division, won two silver medals – Level 10 trampoline and Level 9 double mini.

The T & T team at EWA is coached by Amy McDonald, Josh Williams, and Bret Stout.

Men at The Alamo Challenge

MEN AT THE ALAMO CHALLENGE

mens-team-webThe men’s gymnastics team took on the Alamo Challenge February 13 in San Antonio. Level 7 Cole Wilhelm brought home yet more medals from another successful meet. He was the age 12-13 floor exercise champion (14.9), and parallel bars champion (14.7), and placed second on still rings (14.8) and high bar (14.0), and third on pommel horse for a first place all-around score of 85.4.

Chandler Guvernator tied for silver on high bar (11.0) and won bronze all-around (68.7) for the Level 8 12-13 year-olds.

Three Level 6 gymnasts earned bronze medals. Carter Frederick earned his on parallel bars in the age 8-9 group. Kade Cummings tied for third on vault in the 10-11 division, while Brian McCray earned his bronze on parallel bars in the 12-13 year-old division.

USAG WOMEN AT STATE QUALIFIER

EWA’s women’s team competed at the State qualifying meet held at Texas Women’s University in Denton February 5-7. Level 10 Makenzie Johnson was the Senior A all-around champion with a score of 37.325. She also won gold on vault (9.475) and floor exercise (9.4), silver on balance beam (9.575), and bronze on uneven parallel bars.

Casey Dreyer, also Level 10, placed second all-around (36.6) in the Junior B division, having earned second on vault (9.25) and bars (8.925), and third on floor.

Competing Level 7 in the Junior B division, Isabella Gordillo was the all-around champion (38.35) and also won bars with a score of 9.65. She took silver on vault (9.625) and floor (9.6), and bronze on balance beam (9.475).

TAAF TEAM WINNERS IN PLANO

tag-team-webThe Carpenter Recreation Center was the site of a Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF) gymnastics meet February 6-7.

Level 8 gymnast Maddie Kruse won the all-around (33.35) as well as taking first place on bars (8.5) and beam (8.0), and second on vault (8.65) and floor (8.45). Rachel Pierret took gold on floor exercise (9.0) and vault (8.65), and silver on beam and bars to take second all-around (32.55).

Taylor Brooks, Level 7 Division 2, earned a silver medal on balance beam with a score of 8.4.

Isabelle Muirhead, Level 5 Division 3, earned a 9.1 on balance beam to tie for first place on that event. Kayla Spillman tied for second on floor exercise. In Division 4, Allison Moring tied for third on floor (9.2), and in Division 5, Gabrielle Smith tied for third on vault (8.4).

The Level 4 Achievement gymnasts earned colored ribbons according to their scores. Earning blue ribbons on vault for scores 9.0 and above were Catherine Constantini and Amanda Hares, both earning 9.5, Jessica Mingee (9.4) and Allie Bianchi (9.3). Blue ribbon winners on uneven bars were Amanda Hares (9.6), Catherine Constantini (9.35) and Allie Bianchi (9.0).

On balance beam, red ribbons (for scores of 8.0 to 8.9) were earned by Allie Bianchi, Priscilla Ramirez, Sophia Huessner, and Catherine Constantini. Bianchi, Constantini, Hares and Bria Shavers all earned red ribbons for their scores on floor exercise. Of the EWA team, Constantini had the highest all-around score (36.2), followed by Hares (35.8) and Bianchi (35.6).

MORE AWARDS FOR ALLEN GYM

mens-team-webEagle’s Wings Athletics (EWA) was the place to be on February 6 as their men’s gymnastics team hosted the annual Friendship Invitational, with teams coming into town from around the state.

Three EWA teams took first place in the team awards. Cole Wilhelm was a member of the Level 7 team that earned gold. He earned first place on every event and the all-around. Cole’s high score, 14.8, was on parallel bars, followed by a 14.7 on floor exercise, 14.6 on still rings, 14.4 on high bar, 14.3 on vault, and 13.60 on pommel horse. He earned the all-around gold in the age 12-13 division with a total score of 86.4.

Also taking gold all-around (86.5), was Drew Huck in the age 10-11 group. He was the parallel bars champion (15.2), and tied for silver on pommel horse (14.1), and took bronze on floor and high bar. Christopher Bowling and Drew Sikora tied for first on still rings, both earning 14.9. Bowling also earned second on parallel bars (14.8).

The level 10 team also earned a first place team trophy. Logan Doughty won vault (14.3), and took second on parallel bars, and third on high bar, floor and all-around. Evan Fitzgerald, who competed in the age 14-15 group, took second all-around (72.5) and silver on four events (rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar) and bronze on floor and pommel horse. Adam Templin earned third place on rings and vault in the age 16-18 division.

The final first place team was the age 10 and older boys from Level 5. Brian Le was the all-around (89.6), vault (15.4) and floor exercise champion (15.1). He earned second on pommel horse/mushroom and third on rings, and both bars. Jake Sikora tied for second place on parallel bars and took third on rings in the age 10-11 division.

On the younger Level 5 team, Gavin McAllister earned a silver medal on vault with a score of 15.2.

Carter Frederick was the Level 6 parallel bars champion (15.6), and Quinn Maloney earned third on vault, while Nicholas Brocklesby earned third on rings. The eight boys on the Level 6 team earned the second place team award.

Sole EWA Level 8 gymnast Chandler Guvernator not only won the all-around (66.9), but also won rings, vault, and both bars. He took third on floor and pommel horse.

Level 9 Cameron Lake was the pommel horse champion, and earned silver on parallel bars and all-around, and bronze on vault.

usag-girls-team-webThe Dallas Convention Center was busy the weekend of January 29-31, as it was the venue for gymnastics testing and competitions for teams from around the nation. Eagle’s Wings Athletics (EWA) had their two girls teams participate in the Metroplex Challenge.

EWA’s USA Gymnastics Women’s team, Levels 7 and 10, brought home 13 medals and a trophy. In the Junior B division in Level 7, Isabella Gordilllo brought home four medals, having been crowned all-around champion (37.15) and earning gold on floor exercise (9.675), and balance beam (9.4), and silver on uneven parallel bars (8.725). Teammate Natalie May, in the Senior A division, was the floor exercise champion (9.6), and took second on vault (9.5) and third all-around (36.35).

The Level 10 women’s team took second place in the team competition. Sabrina Schwab and Casey Dreyer competed in the younger division, where Schwab earned 9.4 for second place on balance beam, and Dreyer earned 9.35 for third. Schwab’s all-around score of 36.925 earned her a bronze medal.

Makenzie Johnson, in the older division, earned second on floor exercise (9.25), and third on bars (9.15) and all-around (36.725).

The USAG team at EWA is coached by Helen Verucchi and head coach Alex Atamas.

EWA’s TAAF (Texas Amateur Athletic Federation) team also enjoyed a successful meet. Level 5 Rachel Johnston swept her level by taking gold on every event. She earned 9.0 on beam, 9.1 on floor, 8.5 on vault and 7.75 on bars to get a 34.35 total.

Maleah Ross, in Division 7, took four gold medals (floor – 8.8, beam - 7.75, bars - 7.5 and all-around (30.85). Kayla Spillman won second place on beam (9.10) in Division 3, while Allison Moring earned second on beam (8.65) and third on vault (8.325) in Division 4. Lexie Davis, Haley Rose Benter, Katherine Carter all earned bronze medals.

Winning first place team was Level 7. Taylor Brooks was the beam champion for Division 2 with a score of 8.9. She also earned second on floor (8.65) and third all-around. Hannah Warrick (Division 2) earned bronze medals on vault and bars, and Jenna Wicker (Division 3) on vault and floor.

Hailey Thomas was the bars champion in Level 8 with a score of 7.2. She earned an 8.6 on vault for a bronze medal. Rachel Pierret earned in the top three on each event - second on vault (8.65), floor (8.2) and bars (7.15), and third on beam (7.5) and all-around (31.5). Maddie Kruse won second place all-around (31.75), with second place scores on beam (8.05) and bars (7.15) and a third place win on floor (8.15).

Level 4 competed for achievement ribbons and earned second place for the team award. Catherine Constantini and Allie Bianchi tied for the highest score on vault (9.4) and floor (9.0). Catherine won first on bars and beam, scoring a 9.0 on each, while Allie scored second on both. Sophia Heussner had the second highest scores on vault and floor, while Addie Hebert, Bria Shavers and Priscilla Ramirez all earned bronze medals.

TAAf coaches at EWA are Maria Garcia, Kassandra Bursch, Mandy Glucroft and head coach Alan Kirby.
