HOUSTON MEET DRAWS WORLD ATHLETES

t-t-team-webTop gymnasts from around the world gathered at the George Brown Convention Center March 4–7 for the 16th Annual Houston International Invitational. Among those competing were the trampoline and tumbling team (T & T) and the men’s gymnastics team from Eagle’s Wings Athletics (EWA) in Allen.

Several members of EWA’s T & T team took part in the synchronized trampoline competition. Cole Kirby and Wyatt Sharp were right in sync, and came away as the Level 7 winners. In the Level 9 division, Rebecca Clouthier and Hannah Green won a silver medal, while Caden Kirby and Isaac Rowley won bronze. Coming in second place for Level 6 were Caeley Black and Tyler Dunning.

Cole Kirby and Dunning also earned gold medals in individual events in the 9 and 10 year-old group. Kirby won first on double mini in the Level 7 division, and placed second on trampoline. Dunning won his gold in Level 5 tumbling, and added a silver medal for Level 6 trampoline, and a bronze for Level 7 double mini.

In the Level 9 age 11-12 division, Rowley took second on double mini, while Caden Kirby took third. Rowley also took third on trampoline.

In the 15 and over group, Bryan Bashrum earned two bronze medals – Level 10 double mini and Level 9 trampoline. Hannah Green and Kelsey Dock took second and third, respectively, on Level 9 double mini. Sara Stewart competed level 7 tumbling where she earned a silver medal for second place.

Level 10’s Melissa Courtad and Sydney Wendt won bronze medals. Courtad earned hers on trampoline in the 17 and over age group, while Wendt, in the age 13-14 group, earned third on tumbling and trampoline.

Brittany Stout won second place in level 8 tumbling and Macey Levine took silver medals on both Level 7 double mini and Level 5 tumbling.

mens-team-webThe EWA men’s gymnastics team also had their day at the Invitational. Level 7 Cole Wilhelm won second place on high bar with a score of 14.8, and tied for second on vault (14.4). Out of the 15 competitors in the age 12 and over group, he place fifth all-around (83.0). Drew Huck and Christopher Bowling competed in the age 10-11 division, with 56 other athletes. Huck took sixth place on pommel horse, tied for eighth on vault, and tied for ninth on floor exercise to earn ninth place all-around (85.3).

Level 8 Chandler Guvernator was one of 43 gymnasts in the age 12 and over division. He tied for eighth place on pommel horse and eleventh place all-around (66.5).

Cameron Lake, Level 9, tied for 12th place on floor exercise out of the 78 competitors in his age group.

Johann Handszer and Evan Fitzgerald competed Level 10 in the age 14-15 group. Handszer tied for fifth place on floor exercise (13.7), earned sixth on pommel horse (13.5), tied for eighth on still rings, and tenth on parallel bars and high bar to place sixth all-around (78.2). Fitzgerald placed tenth on vault out of the 48 competitors. On high bar in the age 16-18 division, Justin Muenz earned the seventh spot and Logan Doughty tied for ninth, out of the 57 athletes competing.

On The Road Again

ALLEN, TX: The men’s gymnastics team at Eagle’s Wings Athletics (EWA) had a busy weekend February 26 and 27, competing in meets in New Orleans, Louisiana and in Garland.

Several Level 9 and 10 boys traveled to Tulane University to take part in the New Orleans Jazz Invite. Cameron Lake was the Level 9 all-around champion in the age 12-13 division, earning a score of 72.4. He took gold medals on four events – floor exercise (13.0), parallel bars (12.5), pommel horse (12.2) and high bar (11.5) - and silver on vault (12.7).

Logan Doughty, Evan Fitzgerald, and Adam Templin competed Level 10. Doughty earned first place on parallel bars (13.7) and pommel horse (12.9) in the age 16-18 group. Fitzgerald won vault (14.3) and pommel horse (12.6), and placed second on high bar (12.4) and parallel bars (12.1) in the age 14-15 division. The combined Level 9 and 10 team earned second place in the team awards.

At the Garland Classic Invite the next day, Level 10 Justin Muenz took third place all-around by winning gold on floor exercise (13.5), pommel horse (13.1) and still rings (13.0) and silver on high bar (11.8).

The Level 6 team earned the third place team award. Bradley Weatherford was the vault champion, earning 15.0 on that event in the age 10-11 group. He also placed third on floor exercise (14.4). Carter Frederick, in the age 8-9 division, took two silver medals on parallel bars with a 15.4 and high bar with a 14.5. In the older group, Brian McCray earned a 14.4 on high bar for third place.

The Level 5 team also earned third place. Brian Le was the all-around champion in the age 10 and over division, taking second on parallel bars (15.2) and high bar (14.8), and third on floor exercise (14.6) to help him earn an 87.7 all-around score. Chance Melancon won the vault (15.5) and tied for second on still rings (14.8) with teammate Jake Sikora. In the age 7-8 group, Logan Cobb earned a silver medal on vault for his 15.2 score.

Boys Team in Austin

BOYS TEAM IN AUSTIN

spinnersl5-10sspinnersl5-7-8sspinnersl4spinnersl5-10sThe men’s gymnastics team spent the weekend in Austin, where the Level 5 boys, ages 10 and over, earned the first place team award. Brian Le earned the title of all-around champion with a total score of 88.0. He also won gold on high bar (15.2), silver on floor exercise (14.7) and parallel bars (14.5), and bronze on vault (14.7) and still rings (14.5). Teammate Jake Sikora won gold on parallel bars (14.6) and silver on pommel horse/mushroom (14.7). Chance Melancon was the runner up on vault with a score of 14.8. Andy Hoover rounded out the winning team.

The Level 5, 9 year-olds won second place team, just .1 behind the first place team. Devan Arvidson took second place on high bar (14.9) and Mac Stout placed third on vault (14.50). Ryan Phillips also contributed by getting the highest all-around score (81.2) of the three boys on the team.

Only two EWA boys competed in the 7-8 year-old division, one shy of having enough to compete for the team award. Both boys earned medals – Logan Cobb took gold on still rings (15.3) and Gavin McAllister took silver on high bar (14.9) and bronze on rings (15.0).

The Level 4 team, with only three boys, took third place in the team award. Ethan Tibbs earned third place on still rings (15.3), and Braxton Brooks and Garrett Ganakos contributed to the team score. “Each boy went up from before,” said head coach Greg Schram. “And the team score went up 12 points!”

Men at The Alamo Challenge

MEN AT THE ALAMO CHALLENGE

mens-team-webThe men’s gymnastics team took on the Alamo Challenge February 13 in San Antonio. Level 7 Cole Wilhelm brought home yet more medals from another successful meet. He was the age 12-13 floor exercise champion (14.9), and parallel bars champion (14.7), and placed second on still rings (14.8) and high bar (14.0), and third on pommel horse for a first place all-around score of 85.4.

Chandler Guvernator tied for silver on high bar (11.0) and won bronze all-around (68.7) for the Level 8 12-13 year-olds.

Three Level 6 gymnasts earned bronze medals. Carter Frederick earned his on parallel bars in the age 8-9 group. Kade Cummings tied for third on vault in the 10-11 division, while Brian McCray earned his bronze on parallel bars in the 12-13 year-old division.

MORE AWARDS FOR ALLEN GYM

mens-team-webEagle’s Wings Athletics (EWA) was the place to be on February 6 as their men’s gymnastics team hosted the annual Friendship Invitational, with teams coming into town from around the state.

Three EWA teams took first place in the team awards. Cole Wilhelm was a member of the Level 7 team that earned gold. He earned first place on every event and the all-around. Cole’s high score, 14.8, was on parallel bars, followed by a 14.7 on floor exercise, 14.6 on still rings, 14.4 on high bar, 14.3 on vault, and 13.60 on pommel horse. He earned the all-around gold in the age 12-13 division with a total score of 86.4.

Also taking gold all-around (86.5), was Drew Huck in the age 10-11 group. He was the parallel bars champion (15.2), and tied for silver on pommel horse (14.1), and took bronze on floor and high bar. Christopher Bowling and Drew Sikora tied for first on still rings, both earning 14.9. Bowling also earned second on parallel bars (14.8).

The level 10 team also earned a first place team trophy. Logan Doughty won vault (14.3), and took second on parallel bars, and third on high bar, floor and all-around. Evan Fitzgerald, who competed in the age 14-15 group, took second all-around (72.5) and silver on four events (rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar) and bronze on floor and pommel horse. Adam Templin earned third place on rings and vault in the age 16-18 division.

The final first place team was the age 10 and older boys from Level 5. Brian Le was the all-around (89.6), vault (15.4) and floor exercise champion (15.1). He earned second on pommel horse/mushroom and third on rings, and both bars. Jake Sikora tied for second place on parallel bars and took third on rings in the age 10-11 division.

On the younger Level 5 team, Gavin McAllister earned a silver medal on vault with a score of 15.2.

Carter Frederick was the Level 6 parallel bars champion (15.6), and Quinn Maloney earned third on vault, while Nicholas Brocklesby earned third on rings. The eight boys on the Level 6 team earned the second place team award.

Sole EWA Level 8 gymnast Chandler Guvernator not only won the all-around (66.9), but also won rings, vault, and both bars. He took third on floor and pommel horse.

Level 9 Cameron Lake was the pommel horse champion, and earned silver on parallel bars and all-around, and bronze on vault.

Boys Team in Kansas City

BOYS TEAM IN KANSAS CITY

mens-team-webVault seemed to be the apparatus of choice for the level 6 men’s gymnastics team while at the Kansas City Classic January 29-30. Brian McCray, Bradley Weatherford, and Kade Cummings each won gold on vault for their age group. Kade earned a 14.9 in the 10-year old group. Bradley, age 11, scored a 15.10, and Brian, in the age 12-13 division, earned a 15.0. Brian also earned silver on parallel bars (13.8) and bronze on high bar (14.5) and pommel horse/mushroom (13.7) to tie for second place all-around (82.60). Bradley earned two silver medals, on high bar (14.8) and floor exercise (13.9).

Nicholas Brocklesby and Carter Frederick competed in the 8-9 year-old group, with Carter taking second on parallel bars, and Nicholas tying for second on vault and taking third on still rings. The Level 6 team won second place in the team awards.

Four Level 7 rookies competed against teams from six states and earned first place team award. Drew Huck earned silver all-around in the age 10-11 division with a score of 85.0. He tied for first place on still rings (15.0), took second on parallel bars (14.5) and high bar (14.0), and third on floor (14.7) and pommel horse (12.2).

Christopher Bowling took third place all-around (83.5) after earning silver medals on floor exercise and vault (14.8), and bronze on parallel bars (14.3). Drew Sikora, who earned a 14.6 on rings, improved his all-around score by nearly 10 points from the previous meet.

Cole Wilhelm, who competed in the age 12-13 division, was the parallel bars champion, earning 14.6 on that event. He also took silver medals on rings (14.8) and vault (14.5), and bronze on floor exercise (14.5).

“It was a fun out-of town meet,” said head coach Greg Schram. “Having snow at the same time made it extra special.”

USAG Men Compete In Houston

USAG MEN COMPETE IN HOUSTON

Level 9 and 10 gymnasts from EWA’s men’s team competed at the GymMasters Invite in Houston January 23. Logan Doughty, Level 10, earned a silver medal on vault (14.10) and floor exercise (13.00). Evan Fitzgerald, also Level 10, placed second on parallel bars (12.90) and third on vault (13.90). Adam Templin also helped the team earn third place in the team awards.

Level 9 Cameron Lake had an exciting warm up session on still rings as Olympian Jonathan Horton was in line right in front of him. After the session the entire team got to hear Horton, fellow Olympian Raj Bhavsar, and former Olympic Men’s coach and current Men’s National Team Coordinator, Kevin Mazeika, as they spoke to the athletes about mental toughness and focus.

Greg Schram is head coach of the men’s program at EWA, assisted by Craig Locke, Wesley Cox, Bob Martichuski and Evan Fitzgerald.

Men’s Gymnastics Season Under Way

Gymnasts from the Eagle’s Wings Athletics (EWA) men’s team, levels 7 through 10, took a road trip to Katy for their first meet of the season at the Ricky Deci Invitational January 9.

Cole Wilhelm, a level 7 gymnast who competed in the 12-13 year- old division, was the high bar champion with a score of 14.2. He took silver on both floor exercise (14.8) and still rings (14.0), and bronze all-around (80.80).

rickydecil89Level 8 Chandler Guvernator placed fourth on floor exercise, while Level 9 Cameron Lake took fourth on vault and fifth on floor exercise. Evan Fitzgerald competed Level 10 and placed fifth on vault and still rings.

At a second meet the next weekend, the Star Center Invitational at St. Edwards University in Austin, Cole Wilhelm proved he’s no one-time wonder by winning second place all-around and finishing in the top five on all six events. “Cole has clearly shown that he is dedicated towards his improvement,” said EWA’s men’s team head coach Greg Schram.

rickydecil7The level 7 Wilhelm earned silver medals on high bar (14.4) and pommel horse (14.3), and bronze on vault (14.3). Fourth place finishes on still rings and parallel bars, and fifth on floor exercise secured his silver all-around with a score of 83.70.

Drew Huck, competing Level 7 in the age 10-11 division, tied for fourth on pommel horse and all-around, and fifth on floor exercise. “Drew was sick for days prior to and including the meet”, noted coach Schram, “but he managed not only to compete but do very well too.” Huck, Wilhelm, Christopher Bowling and Drew Sikora tied for third place for the Level 7 team award, having gone up against tough competition from all over the region.

rickydecil10Level 8 Chandler Guvernator earned a bronze medal on pommel horse (9.5), and had fourth place finishes on parallel bars, high bar and all-around. He also took fifth place on floor exercise and still rings, and seventh on vault.

Level 6 top ten finishers on individual events included Landon Smith, Nicholas Brocklesby, Carter Frederick, Bradley Weatherford, Kade Cummings, and Karcen Raney. The 8-9 year-olds in this level won 2nd place team.

The men’s team at EWA is coached by Evan Fitzgerald, Bob Martichuski, Wesley Cox, Craig Locke, and Head Coach Greg Schram.

EWA Rules at Lone Star Invite

ALLEN, TX: 28 gold medals earned two Eagle’s Wings Athletics (EWA) men’s gymnastics teams first place honors in the team competition at the Lone Star Invitational earlier this month.

The Level 5 team led the pack with 20 golds earned by five boys. Gavin McCallister competed in the 7-8 year old group, taking first place on still rings (14.2), high bar (13.6), pommel horse/mushroom (14.6) and all-around (85.6). He tied for gold on vault (14.7) and parallel bars (13.8), and took silver on floor exercise (14.7). In the same age group, Logan Cobb earned bronze medals on rings, vault, parallel bars, and pommel horse/ mushroom.

Devan Arvidson, age 9, won the all-around with a score of 83.8. He took first place on rings (14.6), parallel bars (13.7),high bar (14.0) and tied for gold on floor (14.7). Mac Stout, also 9, tied for first place on vault with a 14.7.

Jake Sikora, the only EWA athlete in the level 5 age 10-11 division, was the rings (14.2) and pommel horse/mushroom (14.8) champion. He tied for silver on parallel bars, and earned bronze on vault.

Brian Le was the all-around champion in the 12 and over division. His first place wins on pommel horse/mushroom (15.2), floor exercise (14.6), rings (14.5), vault (14.8), and high bar (14.5) netted him 6 gold medals, including the all-around (85.6).

Andy Hoover earned silver on rings, parallel bars, and pommel horse/mushroom, and bronze on high bar and all-around. Chance Melancon took third place on rings, vault, parallel bars, and pommel horse/mushroom.

The Level 6 team added 8 gold medals to the cache. EWA athletes were the champions of every event and the all-around in the 8-9 age division.

Nicholas Brocklesby earned half of the team’s gold medals by winning the all-around (80.10). He also won rings (14.6), vault (14.1) and pommel horse/mushroom (13.2),and took second on floor exercise and third on parallel bars. Landon Smith won floor (13.6) and parallel bars (14.1), while Quinn Maloney won high bar (13.5). Smith also took silver on rings and bronze on high bar and pommel horse/mushroom, while Maloney tied for third place on floor exercise.

Carter Frederick also competed in the age group, and earned silver on pommel horse/mushroom, vault, parallel bars and high bar, and bronze on rings.

In the 10-11 age division, Kade Cummings was consistent, and earned second place on four events (floor, rings, vault, and high bar), and third place on high bar and pommel horse/mushroom to take silver all-around. Bradley Weatherford tied for third on parallel bars.

Brian McCray, earned his gold medal on vault (14.4) and earned his silver all-around in the 12-13 age group by taking second place on rings, high bar, and pommel horse/mushroom, and third on parallel bars. Cole Carter tied for third on pommel horse/mushroom, and tied with teammate Karcen Raney for second place on floor exercise.

Braxton Brooks, Garrett Ganakos and Ethan Tibbs competed in the age 6-7 division of Level 4. Tibbs earned silver on parallel bars and rings, and bronze on pommel horse/mushroom and all-around.

“The level 4 boys will naturally have it much tougher this season to place high in awards with only three boys - two of which are rookies,” noted Men’s team head coach, Greg Schram. “But they have great heart and dedication towards learning, having fun, and cheering each other on!”
